Repeat and Dwell

Repeat it, and let its meaning fill the mind as you say it.

Three words carry this sutra. Japa is repetition, saying a thing again and again, here silently. Tat means "that", pointing back to the word just named in the sutra before. Bhavana is a bringing into being, a making present in the mind; it is the dwelling on something until it is felt as real. Artha is meaning, the thing a word points to. So the sutra says: repeat the word, and bring its meaning into being in the mind. Sound alone is not enough. The word and what it stands for are held together. Patanjali says this because the earlier sutras name the Lord and give the word for him, but a name left as bare sound stays empty. The mind needs something to rest on, and a word joined to its meaning gives it one. Vyasa, the oldest commentator, takes the repetition and the meaning-contemplation as one practice, and says the mind of the yogi becomes one-pointed by it. Later readers such as Vachaspati Mishra and Bhoja agree on the plain sense, and stress that the meaning dwelt on is the Lord described in the verses before.

A bell struck once rings, and you keep listening after the sound has thinned, following it into the quiet. The repeated word is the strike. The meaning is the long ringing that the mind stays with.

1. Pick one quiet time today, such as before breakfast or just before sleep. Sit comfortably for five minutes. 2. Say the word silently, once for each slow breath out, without moving your lips. 3. After each repetition, let the meaning settle in the mind for a moment, as the first verse of this reading described it. 4. When attention wanders, notice it and return to the word. Nothing more is asked.
