Two Things Follow
Yoga Sutras 1.29
Meaning · English
From that practice comes the turning of awareness inward to the one who sees, and the obstacles fall away.
Three terms carry the sutra. Pratyak means turned back, facing inward. Cetana is awareness, the act of being conscious. Adhigama is arrival, a reaching. So pratyak-cetana-adhigama is awareness arriving at what faces inward: consciousness finding its own side, not only its objects. Antaraya means what falls between, an obstacle. Abhava means absence. The sutra says that from the repetition and dwelling on Om, two things follow. Awareness turns inward, and the obstacles fall away. Patanjali says this because the earlier sutras name the path but not its fruit. He has just given the practice, and a student asks what it does. Vyasa's Bhashya takes the inward turning as the seer coming to know itself, and the going of obstacles as a result of that, since the obstacles (listed in the next sutra) rest on the mind being scattered and turned outward. Later commentators broadly follow him. Some, such as Bhoja, stress devotion to Ishvara as the source of the result. The sutra itself gives only the two outcomes, joined by one word, and claims nothing more.
A room with the shutters open onto a noisy street holds every passing cart and shout. Close the shutters and turn the chair toward the wall lamp, and the same room settles. Awareness facing outward is the open shutters. Turned inward, it meets its own light, and the interruptions lose their hold.
1. Once today, sit for five minutes somewhere quiet and repeat Om silently, as in the previous sutra, keeping its meaning in mind. 2. When the time is up, stay still for one more minute without doing anything. 3. Notice where your attention rests: on sounds outside, on thoughts, or on the one who is noticing. 4. Later in the day, when something interrupts your work, notice whether it feels as strong as it did yesterday. Just notice.
