Freedom Fully Arrived
Shiva Sutras 3.13
Meaning · English
The state of freedom is accomplished, fully established.
Two words. Siddha means accomplished, from a root meaning to succeed, to reach the end of the work. Svatantra means self-ruled: sva is one's own, tantra is the thread or order that governs. Bhava is a state of being, not an act. Read together, the sutra says that for this person self-rule is no longer something being reached for. It is the state they live in. The inner self is the dancer, and the inner stage is its own. It moves by its own will and is not pushed about by the senses or by whatever shows up. Shiva teaches this after the two sutras before it. In 3.11 the senses have become onlookers. In 3.12 the mind's steadiness has made one's being firm. The result is stated here. It belongs to anava upaya, the way of the individual, where one works with mind, breath and body. The other two ways, shambhava (by pure will) and shakta (by knowing), need no such effort. Kshemaraja's Vimarshini, as the commentators generally read it, takes this freedom to be the practitioner's own nature, now fully present. Bhaskara adds that it is a freedom of natural knowing and acting, full of its own delight.
A child who has just learned to ride a bicycle grips the bars and thinks about every wobble. Years later the rider simply goes where they want, and the balance takes care of itself. The sutra's freedom is that second rider: the skill has become the rider's own nature, and nothing is being held on to.
1. Choose one ordinary task today, such as washing dishes or walking to a shop, and do it slowly for five minutes. 2. Notice whether you are doing it, or whether habit and distraction are doing it for you. 3. When you catch a moment of simply doing it, with attention steady, stay with it for a few breaths. 4. In the evening, recall that moment once. Do not try to make it return.
