Clear Mind, True Being
Shiva Sutras 3.12
Meaning · English
Through the power of clear intelligence, one's own being is brought to completion.
Three words carry this sutra. Dhi is intelligence, from a root meaning to hold in mind and perceive. It is the faculty that sees clearly, not the one that collects facts. Vasha is power or sway: the sutra says the result comes by the sway of this clear seeing. Sattva is being, from the root sat, to be. It means the self's own real nature. Siddhi is accomplishment, a thing coming to completion. Read plainly, the sutra says that when intelligence is clear, the self's own being is brought to completion. Shiva teaches this straight after calling the inner self a stage and the senses its onlookers. The dancer needs a way to know the stage as its own, and the sutra names that way as clear intelligence. It belongs to anava upaya, the way of small means, where the mind itself is the instrument. Shambhava needs no instrument. Shakta works through pure thought. Anava uses ordinary attention, deliberately held. Kshemaraja's Vimarshini, as the tradition reads it, takes the purified intelligence as the doorway through which the self's own nature becomes steady. Bhaskara's Varttika adds a distinct emphasis: the intelligence is skilled at reflecting on one's own nature as consciousness, and the inner pulse of that nature then shines out plainly.
A dancer is already moving in a dark hall, but no one can tell what the dance is. Someone raises the lamps, and the steps, the turns and the face come clear. Intelligence is the lamp. The dancer's being was there all along, and now it shows as itself.
1. Once today, pick a moment of strong feeling, such as irritation, hurry or pleasure. 2. Pause for about a minute and ask quietly, "Who is it that knows this?" 3. Look for the part of you that is aware of the feeling without being the feeling. 4. Tonight, spend three minutes sitting still and noting whether that clear knowing is still there when the feeling has gone.
