The Senses Watch

Shiva Sutras 3.11

प्रेक्षकाणीन्द्रियाणि

Meaning · English

The senses are the onlookers.

Two words carry the sutra. Prekshaka means one who looks on, from the root iksh, to look, with the prefix pra, forward. Indriya means a sense: the eye, the ear, and the other faculties that take in the world. The sutra puts them together in the plural. Seeing, hearing, touching, tasting and smelling are the audience. The sutras before it set a dancer, the self, upon a stage, the inner self. A dance needs people watching, and Shiva names them here. The senses are not strangers to the performance. They sit facing it. This belongs to anava, the way that begins from the individual's own small means, here the ordinary senses. Nothing has to be shut off or reached for. The teaching asks only that the reader see the senses in their true place, as watchers of a play and not as owners of it. Kshemaraja, in his Vimarshini, takes the senses as the spectators before whom the self's dance is shown. Bhaskara's Varttika adds that for the yogi whose senses have become onlookers, the eye and the rest inwardly marvel at the drama of the world as it appears.

Children sit on a school hall floor while a play runs on the stage. Every face is turned forward, eyes wide, and none of them are in the play. The eyes, ears and other senses are those children: they face the performance and take it in, and the performance is not theirs.

1. Once today, sit for two minutes by a window or in a doorway, with nothing to finish. 2. Let sound arrive. Notice that the ear receives it and you did not send for it. 3. Do the same with sight. Name quietly what the eyes are watching, as one names the scenes of a play. 4. When a taste or a touch comes up at a meal, notice it as one more watcher at the same stage.
