Inner Stage

Meaning · English
The inner self is the stage.
Three words are worth taking apart. Ranga is the stage, the place where a play is held and watched. Antar means inner, within. Atma is the self, the one who is at the centre of all you call mine. The sutra joins them: the inner self is the stage. Verse 3.9 named the self as the dancer. Now Shiva says where the dance happens. It does not happen out in the world. It happens within, in the self itself. This rests on the sutras before it. In 3.8 the waking state is a second hand, and in 3.9 the self is the dancer. A dancer needs ground to dance on, and the sutra gives it: the same self that dances is the floor under the dance. This belongs to anavopaya, the way of small effort, where a person starts from the body, the senses and the ordinary round of the day. Seeing the body and senses as moving on an inner stage is a way of looking that needs no special skill. Kshemaraja's Vimarshini takes the inner self to be the ground in which the whole play of the world is shown. Bhaskara's Varttika adds that the one who is settled there lets the senses play out the whole world, from Sadashiva down to earth, as a drama.
Think of a village hall before an evening play. The same bare boards hold the king, the market and the storm, and when the lights go out the boards are still there. The inner self is those boards: every scene of the day is played on it, and none of them leaves a mark.
1. Choose one ordinary scene today, such as a conversation, a meal or a walk to the shop. 2. For a minute, notice it as something happening on a stage, with you as the ground it happens on. 3. Notice what stays the same under the scene: the plain sense of being here. 4. When the scene ends, notice that the ground is still there. Do this once or twice, no longer.
