The Self as Dancer
Shiva Sutras 3.9
Meaning · English
The self is the dancer. The one who dances, in every step and every role, is the self.
Two words, and no verb between them. Atma is the self, the one who says "I" in every moment. Nartaka is the dancer, from the root nrit, to dance. A nartaka is not someone who rests. He moves, takes a posture, and changes it. The sutra sets the two words side by side: the self is the dancer. Shiva teaches it as the next step after the sutras before it. Once delusion has been overcome and waking is seen as a hand held out in play, the question is who is holding it out. The answer is the self, and it does this freely, for its own delight. This sits in anava upaya, the way of the small means, where a person works from ordinary life and the body-mind, since a dancer's steps are what a person already has in hand. Kshemaraja's Vimarshini takes the self to be the dancer because it freely puts on one role after another. Bhaskara's Varttika names the roles: waking, dream and deep sleep, each shown on the self's own ground. Shiva is the name for that self at its source. Shakti is the name for its power to take on forms.
In a village festival, one man plays a king in the afternoon and a beggar at night. The crowd sees two people. Behind the crown and behind the rags, the same man is simply playing. The self is that man, and waking, dream and sleep are his parts.
1. Tonight, before sleep, sit for two minutes and recall the day as a series of roles: someone's child, a worker, a customer, a tired person. 2. For each role, ask who stepped into it and who stepped out. 3. Tomorrow, once at midday, stop for ten seconds and notice that you are in a role right now. 4. Notice the one who is aware of the role. Leave it there, and go on with your day.
