Waking as Second Hand

Shiva Sutras 3.8

Meaning · English

For him, the waking world is a second ray of his own.

Three words carry this sutra. Jagrat is the waking state, from the root jag, to be awake. Dvitiya is second. Kara is hand, ray or doer, from the root kr, to do. Together they say the waking state is a second hand, a second ray. The first is the self's own inner light. The second is that same light reaching out as the day, with its streets, people and tasks. The sutra says the waking world belongs to the one who knows his own light, as his hand belongs to him. Sutra 3.7 speaks of winning innate knowing by conquering delusion. This sutra shows how such a person lives afterwards. He does not leave the waking world. He meets it as his own work. The sutra belongs to anava, the way of small, personal effort, because it is practised through ordinary attention in ordinary waking hours. Shambhava and shakta are the ways of will and of pure knowing. Bhaskara's Varttika reads the yogi as one always awake in oneness. For him the world is a second form, held like a ray or a hand of his own. The commentators generally agree that waking is not cast aside here but taken up as the self's own act.

A potter steadies the clay with one hand and shapes it with the other. The shaping hand is the one you see working. Both are the potter's. In the same way, the waking world is the second hand of one self.

1. Choose one ordinary task today, such as washing a cup or climbing stairs. It should take about two minutes. 2. Before you start, pause for one breath and notice that you are awake and about to act. 3. Do the task slowly. Notice that the hand moving and the one watching are the same you. 4. Afterwards, note once whether the task felt like something done to you or by you. Just note it.
