Filled With Your Own Joy
Vijnana Bhairava 65
Meaning · English
Hold in mind the whole world, or your own body, as full of your own bliss. At once, through your own nectar alone, you become made of the highest joy.
Two words carry the verse. Ananda is joy, and svananda is joy that belongs to you, not joy that came from something. Amrita is nectar, the stuff that does not die, and here it is your own. Parananda, the joy at the end, is the highest of these: not a mood but what you are made of. Now the clauses. First you are given a choice of object: the whole world, or your own body. Either one you remember, or call to mind, as brimming with your own joy. Not joy you add to it, but joy it is already full of. Then the word yugapat: at once. The world and the body are not taken in turns or in steps. Then comes the means: by your own nectar alone, with nothing borrowed. The result is that you become parananda-maya, made of the highest joy. Why it works as a doorway: you do not leave the ordinary moment to find this. The room, the street and your own arm are already in front of you. The verse opens them from inside by changing what they are held as, filled with your own delight. Shivopadhyaya's commentary takes the self-nectar as the joy of awareness resting in itself.
1. Sit or stand wherever you are, eyes open or closed, and let the body be as it is. 2. Bring to mind the room, the street, the whole world as you know it, and your own body inside it. 3. Hold them together, not one after the other, as full of your own joy. 4. When the mind drifts into a story or a picture, return to the whole, world and body at once. 5. If nothing seems to happen, stay with the holding and do not push for a feeling. 6. Stop when the sit feels finished, and let the room look as it looks.
The tradition's account: the mind normally moves from object to object, and each object seems to carry its own pleasure or pain. When world and body are held together as full of one's own joy, the mind has nothing separate to run toward. The support of 'this is outside me' drops away, and awareness is left knowing its own delight. What a sitter tends to notice is plainer. At first the mind makes a picture of joy and pastes it on the room, and that feels forced. Attention flips between the world and the body, trying to take them in turns. The small sign it is working is a softening: the line between the body and the room gets less sharp, or a quiet gladness shows up without a reason. The usual ways it goes wrong are straining to feel happy, waiting for a big event, or deciding that a flat sit means failure. A dull sit is still a sit. Joy borrowed from a memory is also not the point; the verse asks for your own.
