Joy rising at once

Vijnana Bhairava 66

Meaning · English

By this playful practice, at once, doe-eyed one, great joy rises, and by that joy the truth shines out.

Three words carry the verse. Kuhana is a juggler's trick, a conjuring. It names something that looks too light and simple to be the real thing. Prayoga is a putting into use, an application, so the verse speaks of something done, not believed. Mahananda is maha, great, and ananda, joy: a gladness that does not depend on anything being added. Tattva is the thatness of a thing, what it actually is. Read clause by clause: this playful practice, done right away, with no long preparation, lets great joy rise, and that joy is what lets the truth shine. Bhairava calls it a trick on purpose. Nothing is being built or earned. The ordinary moment is opened from inside, and the joy was already there to be found. The commentators give examples of the trick: a tickling under the arms, or watching a juggler's play. Bhairava is saying that the joy which leaps up in such a light moment is where the truth shows itself. He addresses Bhairavi as doe-eyed, a warm, intimate form of address.

1. Sit or stand wherever you are, with your eyes open or closed. 2. Do something small and playful: let yourself be tickled, laugh at a jest, or watch a juggler's trick, the kind of light act the commentators name. 3. Notice the joy that rises at once, before you have done anything to earn it. 4. Stay with that joy lightly, as a game you are playing, not a task you are doing. 5. When the mind wanders, notice that and come back to the joy, without scolding. 6. Let the joy show you what is here, and stop when it feels natural.

The tradition's account is that the mind usually lives by reaching for something outside it, and that reaching hides what it already is. When the practice fills the body or the world with one's own gladness, the reaching has nothing left to want. Joy rises, and awareness is left knowing itself. That is the shining of the truth. What a sitter tends to notice is more modest. At first the thought of gladness is only a thought, a picture held in the head, and the body stays flat. Attention slides off into planning. Often the first sign is small: a softening around the face, a slightly easier breath, a moment when nothing is wanted. The usual failure is to push for a feeling and then judge it. Another is to treat the joy as an object to hold onto. When it is held, it goes stale. When it is simply allowed, it tends to stay a little longer.
