An ant's touch
Vijnana Bhairava 67
Meaning · English
Slowly, binding every channel of the senses with the life-power turned upward, at the moment an ant's touch crawls over you, a supreme pleasure spreads.
Three words carry it. Srota means a stream or channel: the openings through which sight, hearing, touch and the rest run outward toward things. Nibandha means binding or tying together, so the channels are gathered, not shut off one by one. Prana-shakti is the power of the life-breath, and urdhva says it is turned upward. Now the clauses in order. Go slowly. Gather all the outward-running channels with the life-power directed upward. Do this at the moment of an ant's touch, the faint crawling feeling on the skin. Then a supreme pleasure spreads, and the word is spreads, not jumps. Why a doorway: an ant's touch is the most ordinary of moments. Normally the senses rush out to it, and the mind flinches or brushes it away. The text asks for the opposite. The same touch is met with the streams drawn in and lifted, so the moment is opened from inside. The pleasure is not brought from elsewhere. It is found in the touch once the outward run stops.
1. Sit or lie down quietly, with your skin lightly uncovered on the arm or hand, and let your body settle. 2. Wait for a light crawling touch, from an insect, a hair, a thread or a breeze. Do not make it happen with force. 3. When it comes, slowly draw all your senses in together. Let sight, hearing and touch stop running out to it, and let the life in you turn upward. 4. Stay with the touch without brushing it away or naming it. 5. When the mind wanders or you tense, soften and gather again, slowly. 6. Stop when the touch passes and the gathering feels finished.
The tradition's account: the senses are streams that pour out toward their objects, and the prana-shakti normally goes with them. Bound together and turned upward, nothing is left flowing outward, and the pleasure that belongs to awareness itself spreads. What a sitter tends to notice: the crawling touch is hard to leave alone. The first pull is to scratch, tense or look. Attention jumps to the spot, then to the thought about the spot. Staying slow matters, because hurrying makes a grip, and a grip feels like effort in the jaw, shoulders and face. Small signs it is working: the touch stops feeling like an intrusion, the itch-quality softens into plain sensation, and the sensing seems to widen past the skin. It goes wrong when you wait for pleasure and judge each moment by it, or when you gather the senses so tightly the body stiffens. If no ant comes, any light crawling touch serves, and nothing is promised.
