Between fire and poison

Vijnana Bhairava 68

Meaning · English

Set the mind, full of ease, in the middle between fire and poison. Or let it be simply full of breath. Then it is joined with the joy of love's remembered longing.

Three words carry the verse. Vahni is fire, the burning thing. Visha is poison, the bitter or souring thing. Sukha is ease, a mind that is comfortable in itself. The verse asks you to put that easeful mind in the middle, between the two. It does not say to put out the fire or take the poison away. The mind stays where it is and takes a place that is neither one. The second clause gives another way in: the mind simply full of breath, vayu, with nothing else added. Then comes the result the text names. The mind is joined with ananda, joy, of smara. Smara means remembering, and also the longing that remembering stirs. So the joy named is the sweetness of a held memory of love. The logic is the one running through this whole passage. Fierce and bitter moments are ordinary ones. Bhairava does not send you elsewhere to find joy. He says it already sits in the middle of the moment, once the mind stops leaning toward one side and rests easy.

1. Sit or lie somewhere quiet and let your body settle until the mind feels easy, not tight. 2. Notice one thing in you that burns, such as anger or restlessness, and one that is bitter, such as a sour thought. 3. Rest your attention in the space between them. Do not push either one away. 4. If the middle slips, drop the two and let the mind be full of breath alone. 5. When you drift or tense, come back to the ease first, then the middle. 6. Stop when the sit has run its time, and let the mind stay as it is for a moment.

The tradition's account: the mind normally moves by grabbing and pushing away. Fire pulls it one way and poison pushes it the other. Set in the middle with ease, the mind has nothing to lean on, so its movement lapses. What is left is awareness resting in itself, and the joy the text names belongs to that rest, not to the fire or the poison. What a sitter tends to notice: the middle is hard to find at first. Attention keeps sliding toward the stronger thing, the sting or the heat, or goes dull and drifts. Ease is also easy to fake by going slack, which only brings sleepiness. Small signs it is working are a loosening around the jaw and chest, and the burning or bitter thing feeling less like a wall and more like something at either side of you. With only breath, the mind often settles faster, because the breath asks nothing. The usual failure is trying to make the joy happen. It comes, if at all, when the effort stops.
