Joy Settling Into Presence
Vijnana Bhairava 69
Meaning · English
The joy that ends in being entered by Shakti, after two powers meet and are stirred, is the joy of the reality called Brahman. That joy is said to be one's own.
Take a few words apart. Shakti is power, the force that moves and feels. Saṃgama is a coming together, and saṃkṣubdha is shaken up, stirred. Āveśa is entering or being pervaded, as when something fills a space completely. Avasānika is what comes at the end, where a movement finishes and settles. Brahmatattva is the reality of Brahman, the vast ground of everything. Svākya is one's own. Now the clauses in order. Two powers meet. They stir each other. The stirring runs its course and ends in being entered, filled by Shakti. The joy found at that ending is not a lesser joy. It is the joy of the reality itself. And it is called one's own, not borrowed from the other person. This works as a doorway because of where it looks. The stirring is an ordinary moment that anyone knows. Bhairava points to the end of it, where the movement stops and only the filled, settled joy is left. Nothing has to be added to the moment. It is opened from inside, and what was taken for something received turns out to belong to the one who has it.
1. Wait for a moment of real joy to come on its own: a meeting, a relief, a pleasure. You do not need to arrange one. 2. Let it run its course. Do not cut it short and do not stretch it. 3. Watch for the point where the stirring ends and the joy settles, filled and still. 4. Rest your attention on that settled joy, not on what caused it. 5. When the mind jumps to the person, the story or the wish for more, come back to the joy as it is now. 6. Stop when the joy has gone quiet. Do not chase it.
The tradition's account: joy is not made by the thing that seems to cause it. A meeting of powers stirs the mind, the stirring finishes, and in that finishing the mind's usual reaching stops. The support drops away, the object and the wanting both, and awareness is left knowing itself. That self-knowing is what the text calls the joy of the reality, and it is one's own because nothing outside produced it. What a sitter tends to notice is more modest. Attention keeps leaping toward the cause of the joy, the memory or the person, and the first difficulty is that it grabs the story instead of the joy. The small sign it is working is a moment when the pleasure feels less like something arriving and more like something already there, with the wanting gone quiet. The usual ways it goes wrong are chasing the peak again, or going vague and calling the vagueness stillness. If the joy fades, the attention rests where it faded and does not push for more.
