Remembered Pleasure Alone
Vijnana Bhairava 70
Meaning · English
Through licking, churning and pressing, through the fullness of pleasure with a woman, and through remembering it, goddess of gods, a flood of joy comes even when the partner is not there.
The verse names the acts of love in three plain words: lehana, licking or tasting; manthana, churning or rubbing; akota, pressing or striking. Then it names strisukha, the pleasure with a woman, and says it works through bhara, its weight or fullness. That fullness is the point. The text is not pointing at the acts. It points at the moment when pleasure fills the whole of you. Then comes smriti, remembering. The pleasure can be called back by memory. Then the turn: shaktyabhave'pi, even when shakti, the partner, is absent. Nothing outside has to be present. The last word is anandasamplava, a flood of joy, a swelling that covers everything. The logic is the one Bhairava uses throughout: an ordinary moment, opened from inside, shows what it was made of. In full pleasure the mind stops grasping and the joy stands alone. Memory can reach that same fullness without the partner. So the joy was never held by the other person or the act. It was in you, and the act only uncovered it.
1. Sit or lie somewhere private and quiet, and let the body rest. 2. Recall, without hurry, a time of full pleasure with a loved one. Take only its fullness, not the story around it. 3. Stay with that fullness as it is now, in the body, with no one present. 4. When the mind drifts into scenes, plans or wanting more, return to the fullness itself. 5. If the memory turns flat or painful, let it go and rest. 6. Stop when the sit is done. Rest a minute before you move.
The tradition's account: in strong pleasure the mind's usual running stops. Wanting and planning drop away, and awareness is left knowing the joy itself. The partner and the acts are only the support, and when the support is remembered instead of present, the joy still shows. What a sitter tends to notice is different. At first the memory arrives as pictures and stories, and the mind begins to narrate or to chase more. That is the usual way it goes wrong. The attention slides off the fullness and onto the scene. A small sign it is working is that the pictures thin out while the sense of fullness stays, somewhere in the body, with no particular edge. Sometimes the memory goes flat or brings an ache instead. Then nothing is forced. The breath is not directed here, and the body can simply be at rest.
