Great Gladness, Long Awaited

Vijnana Bhairava 71

Meaning · English

When a great gladness comes, or when you see a relative after a long time, find the gladness that has risen in you, keep your mind on it, and let yourself dissolve into it.

Two moments are named: a great gladness arriving (ananda, the word for joy at its fullest), and the sight of a relative (bandhava, someone bound to you by kinship) after a long absence. Both are ordinary, and both lift you before you decide anything. The verse then asks for three things in order. Find the gladness that has risen (udgatam, risen up, come out). Hold it in mind (dhyatva, from dhyai, to rest the mind on one thing). Then let yourself dissolve in it (laya, melting, a lump of salt going into water) until the mind is that gladness (tanmana, mind of that). Nothing is added to the moment. The reunion stays as it is, and attention turns from the face or the news to the gladness itself, which sits in you. By the text's own logic, this works as a doorway because the gladness arrives without effort, and for a moment the mind has stopped planning and wanting. Bhairava's answer to the question about his true nature is that it opens from inside such a moment. Shivopadhyaya's commentary is not quoted here.

1. When a great gladness comes, or you meet someone dear after a long time, let the first moment happen as it does. 2. Then find where the gladness sits in you. Notice it as a feeling, apart from the person or the news. 3. Keep your mind on that feeling and let your attention rest there. 4. When the mind runs to the story or the cause, come back to the gladness itself. 5. Let yourself melt into it until little separates you from it. 6. When it fades, stop. Do not chase it.

The tradition's account: the mind usually moves from object to object. A great gladness stops that movement for a moment. If the mind rests on the gladness and not on the person or event that caused it, the support of the object drops away, and awareness is left knowing itself as the gladness. That is the text's teaching about why laya follows. What a sitter tends to notice: the gladness fades fast, and the mind reaches for the cause, replaying the face or the news. Staying with the felt gladness is harder than it sounds. Small signs it is working are a softer body, a steadier gaze, and a sense of the gladness not needing anything. Common failures are turning it into a story about the reunion, trying to make the feeling bigger, or judging how strong it is. When it thins, there is nothing to force. You can only be with what is left.
