Delight in Eating and Drinking
Vijnana Bhairava 72
Meaning · English
When the delight in the taste of eating and drinking widens, hold the state of fullness it leaves. From that, great joy comes.
Three words carry it. Rasa is taste, and also the juice or essence of a thing. Vijrmbhana is opening wide, the way a flower unfolds or a body stretches. Bharita is filled, and avastha is a state, so the phrase means a condition of being full. Bhavayet means to hold something in being until it is present, not to think about it. Now the clauses. There is delight in eating and drinking, and that delight is a joy of taste. The verse watches it widen. Then it asks you to hold the fullness that remains, and says great joy follows from that. Nothing is dropped: the meal, the pleasure, the widening, the fullness, the joy. It works as a doorway because it asks for no other place. Everyone has had a moment when a taste was so good that wanting stopped for a breath. The text takes that ordinary moment and opens it from inside. The joy was never in the food alone. The food was the occasion, and the fullness is what the occasion pointed to.
1. Sit down with a small amount of food or drink you like, and nothing else to do. 2. Take a mouthful and go slowly. Stay with the taste while it is strongest. 3. Let the delight widen without reaching for the next mouthful. 4. When the taste fades, drop the food from attention and keep the fullness that remains. 5. When the mind wanders, come back to the taste, then to the fullness. 6. Stop when the meal is done.
The tradition's account runs like this. In the sharpest moment of taste the mind's usual movement, reaching toward what comes next, stops. The food is no longer a thing being held, and what is left is awareness filled with itself. That fullness is the joy the verse names, and it was there before the meal. A sitter tends to notice smaller things first. The mind runs ahead to the next bite, or starts commenting on the flavor. The jaw, tongue and throat soften when attention rests on taste instead of on getting through the plate. Sometimes the pleasure seems to spread past the mouth and become less about the food. That is a small sign it is working. Usual mistakes: chasing more of the taste, which only brings back the reaching; mistaking a stuffed stomach for fullness; and turning the whole thing into analysis. The fullness the verse means is quiet and needs no extra helping.
