Song Becomes the Listener

Vijnana Bhairava 73

Meaning · English

For the yogi whose self has become one with the matchless joy of tasting song and other pleasures of the senses, absorption in that joy lifts the mind and steadies it, and he is that very self.

Two words carry the verse. Tanmayatva is being made of that: absorbed so fully in something that no gap is left between you and it. Manorudhi is the mind rising up and taking its seat, no longer scattering. The verse opens with song, and the words 'and other objects' widen it to anything the senses taste: a sound, a flavour, a touch. The joy of such a moment is called unequalled, because nothing ordinary matches its fullness. The yogi in question is the one whose self has already become one with that joy. He is not standing apart, enjoying it as a spectator. Because he is absorbed, the mind climbs up and stays put. The last clause says that from this steadiness he is that very self. The logic is plain. Song never needed to be given up or turned into something else. The moment of being fully taken by a sound already holds the mind still. What stays still is not the sound but the one who hears. So the ordinary pleasure is opened from inside, and what it opens onto is the knower, which was there all along.

1. Sit where a sound you love can reach you: a song, a note held on an instrument, or a voice. 2. Let it play and listen with your whole attention, as you would to a person you love. 3. When you catch yourself naming, judging or waiting for the next phrase, come back to the sound itself. 4. Let the joy of it fill the listening until there is hardly a gap between hearing and sound. 5. When the sound ends, stay still for a few breaths with the mind as it is. 6. Stop when the listening loosens into thought.

The tradition's account: the mind normally moves from object to object, and that movement is what veils the self. In a joy this complete the movement stops. The object stops being something apart, the support of 'me here, sound there' falls away, and awareness is left knowing itself. That is the text's teaching. What a sitter tends to notice is humbler. At first the mind slips in and judges the music, names the instrument, or reaches ahead for the next phrase. Each of these puts a gap back between you and the sound. A small sign of it working is a moment when the listening has no commentary and the sense of being the one who listens loosens. The body often goes quiet and the breath shortens without effort. The usual ways it goes wrong are straining to hold the joy, chasing it when it fades, or starting to watch yourself enjoy. Then the absorption breaks and you are an observer again.
