Wherever the Mind Rests
Vijnana Bhairava 74
Meaning · English
Wherever the mind finds contentment, let it be held right there. In each such place, the nature of supreme joy comes forward and takes shape.
The verse is short and has one instruction. Take 'manas', the mind, the part that wants, reaches and settles. 'Tushti' is contentment, the small satisfied feeling when the mind stops reaching for the next thing. 'Dharayet' comes from the root for holding or bearing: you do not push the mind, you keep it where it already is. 'Parananda' is joy beyond the ordinary kind, joy that does not depend on a particular object. Now the clauses. Wherever the mind is content, hold it there. Wherever you do that, in each such place, the true nature of that joy comes into being. Nothing is said about which places count. Any spot where the mind is content will do. The logic is the one Bhairava has used all along: the ordinary moment, opened from inside. The contentment was never in the object. It was the mind pausing, and the pause is the doorway. Holding the mind there lets that pause show what it is. Shivopadhyaya's commentary is not quoted here, so nothing is claimed for it.
1. Sit or stand anywhere, in an ordinary moment, such as warm tea in your hands or light on a wall. 2. Wait until you notice the mind is content with something. Do not hunt for it. 3. Stay with that place. Keep attention there as you would keep a hand on a sleeping animal. 4. When the mind wanders, come back to the same place of contentment. If it has gone, wait for the next one. 5. Do not praise it or describe it to yourself. 6. Stop when the settledness fades, or after ten minutes.
The tradition's account: the mind moves because it keeps looking for something to rest on. When it finds a place of contentment, the movement slows. If awareness stays there instead of leaping to the next thing, the support of the object falls away and what remains is the joy itself, awareness resting in its own nature. The text says that joy was present in each such place all along. What a sitter tends to notice: the first difficulty is that contentment is shy. Once you notice it, you start examining it, and it thins out. The mind also wants to praise the moment or tell someone about it, and that is another leap. Small signs it is working are a quieter attention, less pull toward the next thought, and the object seeming less important than the settledness. It goes wrong in two usual ways. You chase the pleasant feeling and grip it, or you decide the moment is too ordinary to count and move on.
