Watching a Wish Rise

Meaning · English
When a wish has just risen, look at it and bring it to stillness. From wherever it came, from that very place, it is absorbed back again.
Three words carry the verse. Icchā is wish, the sudden wanting that comes before any action. Śama is calm, a settling, the stop of movement. Līyate is dissolving back, the way salt goes into water and is no longer found as salt. The verse speaks of a wish as it comes up. The word jhagiti means at once: it is how quickly you are to look. You catch it at the start, before it has grown into a plan or a story. Then two things are asked: look at it, and let it settle. Looking comes first. You do not push the wish away or feed it. The last half gives the reason. The wish has a source, the same place every wish comes from. Since it rose from there, it can sink back to there. Nothing has to be carried off or destroyed. By the text's own logic this makes an ordinary moment a doorway. A craving is a small movement of awareness, and if you watch it at its start you see where it rises from and where it ends. Shivopadhyaya's commentary reads the wish as a stirring of the self's own power, which returns to the self when seen.
1. Sit or stand wherever you are, with the eyes soft or closed. 2. Wait for a wish to come up: a want to move, to check something, to eat, to speak. 3. When one rises, stop and look at it. Do not act on it and do not push it away. 4. Keep looking at it. It came from somewhere in you, and left alone it goes back there. 5. Let the wish settle back. If another rises, do the same. 6. If you got lost in a wish already, begin again with the next one. Stop when the time you set is over.
The tradition's account: a wish is a movement in the mind. When awareness looks at that movement without joining it, the movement has nothing to hold on to. It subsides into the awareness it rose from, and what remains is that awareness knowing itself. The text teaches this as how the wish ends, not as suppression. What a sitter tends to notice is more modest. The first difficulty is timing. Most wishes are noticed late, when you are already reaching for the phone or the food. Catching one at its first flicker takes many tries. When you do catch one, the pull often seems to hang for a moment, then thin out, and the mind feels briefly roomier. Small signs it is working: the wish loses its urgency, and you can see its edges. Common ways it goes wrong: you fight the wish, which makes it louder; you turn the looking into a commentary about the wish; or you wait for a special state and miss the ordinary small wants that keep arriving.
