Who Is Left Over
Vijnana Bhairava 97
Meaning · English
When no wish has risen in me, and no knowing either, what am I then? In truth, I am just that. Being so, one becomes absorbed in it, with the mind made one with it.
The verse asks a question and then answers it. Take away a wish (icchā). Take away a knowing (jñāna), meaning any particular thought or perception. What is left of 'me'? The answer is that you are not nothing, and you are not something added later. You are just that: the bare presence in which wishes and knowings show up. Tattvataḥ means 'in truth' or 'by its real nature', so the claim is that this is what you actually are, not a state you manufacture. Tathābhūta means 'being just so'. Līna means dissolved or absorbed, the way salt is in water. Tanmanā means 'with the mind in that', the mind no longer standing apart and looking at it. So the clauses run in order: no wish, no knowing, ask what remains, find it is you, and rest there until the mind is that. The doorway works because it needs no special moment. Every ordinary day has gaps where one wish has ended and the next has not begun. The text opens those gaps from inside, by asking about them.
1. Sit or stand where you are, with your eyes open or closed, and let the mind do what it does. 2. Wait for a wish to end: a want, a plan, a small itch to do something. Let it finish without feeding it. 3. In the space after, ask once, quietly: what am I now, with no wish and no knowing? 4. Do not answer in words. Stay as the one who is asking. 5. When a new thought comes, let it pass and wait for the next gap. Do not chase it. 6. Stop when the sitting time is done, and leave slowly.
The tradition's account: the mind's movement is made of wishes and knowings. When both are absent, the support the mind leans on drops away, and awareness is left knowing itself. Absorption is that awareness no longer being interrupted. What a sitter tends to notice: the gap is very short at first. A wish ends, and almost at once the next thought fills the space, often the thought 'is this it?' Attention keeps jumping forward to check, and the checking is itself a new knowing. Small signs it is working: the gap is noticed a little sooner, it lasts a breath or two longer, and the question 'what am I now?' feels answered without words. Usual ways it goes wrong: forcing the mind blank, which only adds a wish to be blank. Or mistaking dullness or drifting for the gap. A real gap feels awake and plain, not foggy.
