Stilling the Storm Moments
Vijnana Bhairava 101
Meaning · English
In the place where desire, anger, greed, delusion, pride and envy arise, make the mind unmoving, still as water without a ripple. Then what is left over is that very reality.
The verse names six pulls: kama is wanting, krodha is anger, lobha is grasping greed, moha is confusion or infatuation, mada is pride, matsarya is envy. It speaks of their gocara, the field where they graze, the ordinary moment in which one of them is running. Buddhi is the mind that judges and decides. Nistimita means without ripple, motionless. The instruction is plain: when one of these is present, hold the judging mind without movement. No pull is fought and none is fed. Then something remains, and the text calls it tat tattva, that reality, what stays when the movement is taken away. The logic is that these states are not outside the doorway, they are the doorway. Each one is a stir in awareness, and awareness is what is stirred. Take the stir out and the awareness underneath is plainly there, because it never left. Shivopadhyaya's commentary reads the stilled mind as the point where the Bhairava nature shows itself as what remains.
1. Wait for a real moment of want, anger, greed, confusion, pride or envy. Do not stage one. 2. Sit, stand or stay where you are. Let the shoulders and jaw loosen. 3. Stop reaching toward the thought that feeds it. Hold the judging mind still, like water with no ripple. 4. Do not push the feeling away. Leave it where it is. 5. When the mind starts arguing again, stop that and return to stillness. 6. Stay a few minutes. Notice what is left when the movement drops.
The tradition's account: the mind's movement is what covers awareness. Desire, anger and the rest are waves in that movement. When the waves stop, no support is left for the sense of a separate doer, and awareness remains knowing itself. The text gives this as the teaching, not as something to take on trust. What a sitter tends to notice: the first difficulty is that stilling feels like suppressing. Jaw, belly and hands tighten, and the anger or want simply gets louder. That is the usual way it goes wrong. The small sign it is working is different: attention stops following the story about the other person or the object, and the feeling is just there, with less push behind it. Thoughts may still pass. The pull can come back within seconds. Some find a quiet gap that is not dull or sleepy, and some find nothing. Both are ordinary.
