Sudden Jolts Open It

Vijnana Bhairava 118

Meaning · English

At the start or end of a sneeze, in fear, in grief, at the edge of a gorge, in flight from battle, in plain curiosity, at the edge of hunger: the state is made of Brahman's presence.

The verse is a list of ordinary jolts. A sneeze, a scare, a loss, a drop under your feet, running from danger, a sudden wish to know, the sharp edge of hunger. Each one briefly stops the usual chatter. Three words carry it. Adyanta means the beginning and the end, so the verse points at the edges of each moment, where it starts or just finishes. Sattā means simply being, that something is. Brahmasattā is the bare fact of being, with nothing added to it. Daśā is a state or condition, how you find yourself right now. So the plain sense is this. At the start or end of a sneeze, of fear, of grief, of curiosity, of hunger, the state you are in is already made of that being. Nothing has to be brought in. Every clause names a different door, and none is ranked above another. The logic is the one Bhairava has been building. If the whole of reality is his, then no moment can be outside it, including the ones you would never call spiritual. A jolt works as a doorway because it loosens the story you tell about the moment. What is left is the moment itself, opened from inside.

1. Wait for a real jolt. A sneeze, a start, a pang of worry, a sudden question, hunger arriving. 2. Do not push it away and do not follow its story. Stay at its edge, at the very start or just as it ends. 3. Notice the state you are in at that moment, before you name it. 4. When the mind rushes in with an explanation, let it go, and wait for the next edge. 5. Do this in the moment it happens, wherever you are. A few minutes of attention afterward is enough.

The tradition's account first. The mind is always moving from one thing to the next, and that movement is what covers the bare presence. A sudden jolt interrupts the movement for an instant. The support the mind leans on, the plan or the story about what is happening, drops away. What remains is awareness knowing itself, and the text says that was there the whole time. What a sitter tends to notice is smaller. The gap is very short. Before you can look at it, the mind has already rushed in with a name for the fear or the sneeze, and the gap is gone. The first difficulty is simply arriving in time. Small signs it is working: a brief stillness at the edge of the jolt, a sense that the feeling is happening in something wider than you. Usual ways it goes wrong: waiting for a dramatic event, forcing a fear to appear, or turning the gap into something to admire and so losing it.
