Keeping and Gaining in Peace

Rig Veda 7.86.8

Meaning · English

Varuna, self-sustaining one, may this praise rest close within your heart. May there be peace for us in keeping and in gaining. Gods, guard us always with well-being.

With the confession made, Vasishtha offers the song itself and asks that it settle inside Varuna's heart, not merely be heard. He calls Varuna the god with power of his own; Sāyaṇa reads the same word as 'rich in food'. Then he names two sides of ordinary life: getting what is still out of reach, and keeping safe what is already held. He asks that trouble be quieted in both. The last line turns to all the gods together and asks to be guarded always.

A note written after an argument, folded small and tucked into the other person's coat pocket, so it travels with them all day. Vasishtha wants his words kept that way: not read once and set aside, but carried close to Varuna's heart, where the one who was wronged keeps coming back to them.
