Rig Veda 7.86.7

अरं दासो न मीळ्हुषे कराण्यहं देवाय भूर्णयेऽनागाः। अचेतयदचितो देवो अर्यो गृत्सं राये कवितरो जुनाति

Meaning · English

Free of fault, may I serve the generous, ardent god fully, as a servant serves. The noble god made the unknowing know; wiser still, he spurs the singer toward wealth.

Vasishtha asks to stand blameless and serve Varuna fully, as a servant attends a master. Sāyaṇa takes the blamelessness as the god's gift: pardon comes first, then whole service. The word rendered 'ardent' he reads as the one who sustains the world; others hear a god quick to anger. The second half answers the earlier confusion. The poet did not know his fault, and this god makes the unknowing understand. Being wiser, he also moves the one who praises him toward prosperity.

A child stares at a wrong sum until a teacher sits beside her and points to the line where the carry went missing. She could not see it alone; once shown, she can redo the page cleanly. Varuna is that teacher: the poet's not-knowing is met by one who knows more, and the clean page becomes his offering.

निर्दोष होकर मैं उस उदार, उत्कट देव की पूरी सेवा करूँ, जैसे दास सेवा करता है। उस श्रेष्ठ देव ने अनजान को जानकार बनाया; और भी अधिक ज्ञानी वह गायक को धन की ओर प्रेरित करता है।

वसिष्ठ माँगता है कि वह निर्दोष खड़ा रहे और वरुण की पूरी सेवा करे, जैसे दास स्वामी की सेवा में रहता है। सायण इस निर्दोषता को देव का वरदान मानता है: पहले क्षमा आती है, फिर पूरी सेवा। जिस शब्द का अर्थ 'उत्कट' किया गया है, उसे वह जगत का पालन करने वाला पढ़ता है; दूसरे इसमें शीघ्र क्रोध करने वाले देव को सुनते हैं। ऋचा का उत्तरार्ध पहले की उलझन का उत्तर देता है। कवि अपना दोष नहीं जानता था, और यह देव अनजान को समझ देता है। अधिक ज्ञानी होने के कारण वह अपनी स्तुति करने वाले को समृद्धि की ओर भी ले जाता है।

एक बच्ची गलत जोड़ को एकटक देखती रहती है, जब तक कोई शिक्षक उसके पास बैठकर वह पंक्ति नहीं दिखाता जहाँ हासिल छूट गया था। अकेले वह इसे देख नहीं पाई; दिखाए जाने पर वह पूरा पन्ना साफ़-साफ़ फिर से हल कर सकती है। वरुण वही शिक्षक है: कवि के अनजानेपन के सामने वह आता है जो अधिक जानता है, और साफ़ पन्ना उसकी भेंट बन जाता है।
