Drink, Dice, Anger, Sleep

Rig Veda 7.86.6

Meaning · English

It was not my own will, Varuna, but a snare: drink, anger, dice, heedlessness. The elder stands near the younger to mislead. Even sleep does not keep wrong away.

Vasishtha does not claim innocence. He says the wrong did not begin in his own will. Something gripped him: drink, anger, the dice, plain heedlessness. Sāyaṇa reads that grip as a course fixed at birth; others read it as a snare. The elder near the younger is a stronger power standing over a weaker one; Sāyaṇa takes it as the Lord himself. Even asleep, a person slips from rta, the true order that Varuna keeps.

A swimmer at the beach feels the sand slide out from under his feet as a wave draws back. He never chose to drift. The current moved him, and still he is the one now far from shore. Vasishtha speaks the same way: the pull was real, and he stands where it left him, asking to be brought back.
