Release From Inherited Wrongs

Meaning · English
Untie the wrongs inherited from our fathers, and those we did with our bodies. King, release Vasishtha like a thief who has fed cattle, like a calf from its rope.
The poet asks Varuna to untie two kinds of wrongdoing. One kind comes from the fathers, a debt he did not choose but still carries. The other he and his people did with their own bodies, by their own acts. The word for wrong also carries the sense of betrayal, a broken faith that binds the one who broke it. In Sāyaṇa's reading the thief has made amends by feeding the cattle, and so may be released; others take him as a thief simply let go. Vasishtha names himself.
A boat at a jetty is held by two ropes. One was tied by whoever moored it before, the other by the person now aboard. Untying only one leaves the boat swinging in place. Vasishtha asks for both knots to be loosened: the wrong he inherited and the wrong he did himself.
