किमाग आस वरुण ज्येष्ठं यत्स्तोतारं जिघांससि सखायम्। प्र तन्मे वोचो दूळभ स्वधावोऽव त्वानेना नमसा तुर इयाम्

Meaning · English

Varuna, what great wrong did I do, that you would strike your friend who praises you? Tell me, strong one none can harm; cleared, I will hurry to you, bowing.

Vasishtha does not deny a fault. He asks which one. He calls the wrong 'great', the heaviest of his wrongs, and he cannot see it. He calls himself friend and singer of praise, which is why the threatened blow makes no sense to him. He calls Varuna one no one can harm and strong in his own nature. Then he asks for a plain answer: name the fault, and he will set it right and come quickly, bowing. Sāyaṇa takes the bowing as reverence or as an offering.

A student gets an exam back with a low mark and no red ink anywhere on the pages. She takes it to the teacher's desk and asks one thing: show me where. Until the mistake is circled, she cannot correct it. Vasishtha brings Varuna the same request: point to the error, so it can be put right.

वरुण, मैंने ऐसा कौन-सा बड़ा अपराध किया कि तुम अपनी स्तुति करने वाले मित्र पर प्रहार करोगे? मुझे बताओ, बलवान, जिसे कोई आहत नहीं कर सकता; दोष से मुक्त होकर मैं नमन करता हुआ शीघ्र तुम्हारे पास आऊँगा।

वसिष्ठ दोष से इनकार नहीं करते। वे पूछते हैं कि वह कौन-सा है। वे उस अपराध को 'बड़ा' कहते हैं, अपने अपराधों में सबसे भारी, और फिर भी उसे देख नहीं पाते। वे स्वयं को मित्र और स्तुति-गायक कहते हैं, इसीलिए सामने खड़ा प्रहार उनकी समझ में नहीं आता। वे वरुण को ऐसा कहते हैं जिसे कोई आहत नहीं कर सकता और जो अपने स्वभाव से ही बलवान है। फिर वे सीधा उत्तर माँगते हैं: दोष का नाम बताओ, और वे उसे सुधारकर, नमन करते हुए, शीघ्र आएँगे। सायण इस नमन को श्रद्धा या भेंट के रूप में लेते हैं।

एक छात्रा को उसकी परीक्षा की कॉपी कम अंकों के साथ लौटाई जाती है, और पन्नों पर कहीं भी लाल स्याही नहीं है। वह उसे अध्यापक की मेज़ तक ले जाती है और बस एक बात पूछती है: मुझे दिखाइए कि कहाँ। जब तक भूल पर घेरा नहीं लगता, वह उसे सुधार नहीं सकती। वसिष्ठ वरुण के पास यही विनती लेकर आते हैं: भूल की ओर संकेत करो, ताकि उसे ठीक किया जा सके।
