पृच्छे तदेनो वरुण दिदृक्षूपो एमि चिकितुषो विपृच्छम्। समानमिन्मे कवयश्चिदाहुरयं ह तुभ्यं वरुणो हृणीते

Meaning · English

Wanting to see it, Varuna, I ask about that wrong. I go to the knowing to ask them. The poets tell me the same thing: Varuna is displeased with you.

Vasishtha senses he has done something wrong and cannot name it. He wants to see the fault plainly, so he asks Varuna directly, then goes round to people who know. The word for the wrong means a fault that clings to a person until it is undone. Sāyaṇa reads it as the reason Vasishtha feels tied in Varuna's cords. The poets, those who see further than others, agree on only one thing: Varuna is displeased. They confirm the distance. None of them names the cause.

A warning light comes on in a car's dashboard. The driver asks one mechanic, then another, then a neighbour who knows engines. Each looks and says the same thing: something is wrong. None can find what. The glowing light is Varuna's displeasure, plain to everyone. The hidden fault behind it is what Vasishtha still asks to see.

वरुण, उसे देखने की इच्छा से मैं उस दोष के बारे में पूछता हूँ। मैं जानकारों के पास पूछने जाता हूँ। कवि मुझसे एक ही बात कहते हैं: वरुण तुमसे अप्रसन्न है।

वसिष्ठ को लगता है कि उससे कोई भूल हुई है, पर वह उसका नाम नहीं ले पाता। वह दोष को साफ़-साफ़ देखना चाहता है, इसलिए सीधे वरुण से पूछता है, फिर जानकार लोगों के पास जाता है। इस दोष के लिए आया शब्द ऐसी भूल का अर्थ देता है जो मिटाए जाने तक व्यक्ति से चिपकी रहती है। सायण इसे वह कारण मानता है जिससे वसिष्ठ स्वयं को वरुण के पाशों में बँधा अनुभव करता है। कवि, जो औरों से आगे देखते हैं, केवल एक बात पर सहमत हैं: वरुण अप्रसन्न है। वे इस दूरी की पुष्टि करते हैं। उनमें से कोई भी कारण नहीं बताता।
