Meaning · English
I talk it over with my own self: when shall I be inside Varuna? Would he accept my offering without anger? When, my mind at ease, shall I see his mercy?
The seer is alone with a question he cannot settle, talking it through with himself. The word is literally his own body. He feels a distance between himself and Varuna and wants it closed. To be 'inside' Varuna, Sāyaṇa says, is to be held in the god's mind. The offering may be a hymn or a poured gift; Sāyaṇa allows both. He suspects an anger he cannot name, and asks when, with a calm mind, he will look up and find mercy.
Someone stands at a friend's door after weeks of silence, holding a small gift, going over in their head what might have gone wrong and whether the door will open to a smile or a cold look. That rehearsal on the doorstep is the seer's state: a rift felt, its cause unknown, the gift ready, the face not yet seen.
