The One Who Holds the Worlds Apart

Meaning · English
His greatness makes creatures wise. He propped wide heaven and earth apart, drove the high, great vault onward, the star twofold, and spread the earth.
The hymn opens on the size of the one being addressed. Varuna is the god who keeps the world in its right order. The proof given is physical. He propped sky and earth apart, he set the heavens moving, and he laid the ground out flat and wide. Those born under such greatness are wise, though Sāyaṇa takes the word as 'steady'. He reads 'the star twofold' as the sun by day and the stars by night.
A tent stands because of one pole in the middle. Take it out and the canvas drops onto the ground, and there is nowhere left to stand. The room inside is not empty air; it is held. Varuna is that pole between sky and earth, and the space where people live and act is space he keeps open.
