The Self That Pervades All

Shvetashvatara Upanishad 1.16

Meaning · English

The Self that fills all things, set within them like butter within milk, rooted in self-knowledge and discipline: that is Brahman, the highest teaching. That is Brahman, the highest teaching.

The Self is not kept in one place. It runs through everything, the way butter is already present all through milk before anyone churns it out. Two things are its roots, the ground it is reached from: knowing the Self directly, and disciplined effort that costs something. Brahman is the name for that reality present everywhere, and the seer calls it the highest teaching. He says the last line twice. Repeating a line marks the close of a section, and it also presses the point home.

Stir a spoonful of sugar into a cup of tea. A minute later you cannot see a single grain, yet every sip is sweet, from the top of the cup to the bottom. The Self is like that sweetness: not sitting in one corner of things, but present through all of them at once.
