Yoking the Mind First
Shvetashvatara Upanishad 2.1
Meaning · English
Savitr, the one who sets things moving, first harnessed the mind and stretched thought toward what is real. Seeing the light of Agni, he carried it up from the earth.
Savitr is the sun understood as the power that starts all motion. The first thing he does is harness the mind, the way a driver yokes a horse to a cart. The word for that harnessing shares a root with yoga. With the mind held in place, he turns his thinking toward what is real. Only then does he notice the light of Agni, the fire, and lift it up out of the earth. The order matters: the steadied mind comes first, and the light is found after.
Picture a magnifying glass held over paper on a sunny day. While the hand wanders, the sunlight spreads into a pale blur and nothing happens. Held still, the light gathers into one hot point that begins to glow. The still hand is the harnessed mind, and the glowing point is the fire's light that steadiness brings into view.
