Striving in Savitri's Light

Shvetashvatara Upanishad 2.2

युक्तेन मनसा वयं देवस्य सवितुः सवे । सुवर्गेयाय शक्त्या

Meaning · English

With attention held steady, we stand within the urging of the god Savitri, the sun who sets all things moving, and press with all our power toward the world of light.

The speakers are a group, and they describe two things happening at once. First, their attention is held in place, harnessed instead of wandering. Second, they stand inside the urging of Savitri, the sun seen as the god who stirs things into motion. Within that push, they put out their own effort, their full power and drive. The goal is the heavenly world, the bright realm above. Their work and the god's impulse are not rivals. One runs inside the other.

Picture a cyclist on a long flat road with a strong wind at her back. She still pedals hard, legs working the whole way, but the wind carries her further than her legs could alone. The pedaling is the steadied attention and effort. The wind is Savitri's urging, and the effort rides inside it.

एकाग्र ध्यान के साथ, हम सब कुछ गतिमान करने वाले सूर्य, सविता देव की प्रेरणा के भीतर स्थित होकर, अपनी पूरी शक्ति से प्रकाश के लोक की ओर बढ़ते हैं।

कल्पना कीजिए, एक साइकिल चलाने वाली स्त्री लंबी समतल सड़क पर है और तेज़ हवा उसकी पीठ की ओर से बह रही है। वह फिर भी ज़ोर से पैडल चलाती है, पूरे रास्ते उसके पैर काम करते रहते हैं, पर हवा उसे उससे कहीं आगे ले जाती है जितना अकेले उसके पैर ले जा पाते। पैडल चलाना ही स्थिर ध्यान और प्रयत्न है। हवा सविता की प्रेरणा है, और प्रयत्न उसी के भीतर सवार होकर चलता है।
