रत्नैः कल्पितमासनं हिमजलैः स्नानं च दिव्याम्बरं नानारत्नविभूषितं मृगमदामोदाङ्कितं चन्दनम् । जातीचम्पकबिल्वपत्ररचितं पुष्पं च धूपं तथा दीपं देव दयानिधे पशुपते हृत्कल्पितं गृह्यताम्

Meaning · English

Ocean of mercy, Lord of all creatures: a jewelled seat, snow-water bath, jewelled cloth, musk-scented sandal, jasmine, champak, bilva, incense, a lamp, all made in my heart. Please accept.

The singer walks through the opening steps of a temple worship one by one. First Shiva is offered a seat, then a bath, fresh clothes, sandal paste, flowers, incense and a lamp. Nothing on the list is held back. The seat is jewels. The water is melted snow. The cloth is heavenly and set with gems, and the sandal is scented with musk. None of it is physical. The last words say so plainly: all of this was shaped in the heart. Shiva is asked to take it anyway, as the one who is full of mercy.

A small child sets out an empty toy teacup and saucer, pours from a plastic pot, adds two lumps of nothing, and hands it carefully to her grandfather. He sips slowly and says it is just right. The cup was empty. The care in the pouring was real, and that is what he received.

दया के सागर, सब प्राणियों के स्वामी: रत्नों का आसन, हिम-जल से स्नान, रत्नजड़ित वस्त्र, कस्तूरी से सुगंधित चंदन, चमेली, चंपा, बेलपत्र, धूप, दीप, यह सब मेरे हृदय में रचा गया। कृपया स्वीकार करें।

गायक मंदिर की पूजा के आरंभिक चरणों को एक-एक करके पूरा करता है। पहले शिव को आसन दिया जाता है, फिर स्नान, नए वस्त्र, चंदन, फूल, धूप और दीप। सूची में से कुछ भी बचाकर नहीं रखा गया। आसन रत्नों का है। जल पिघली बर्फ़ का है। वस्त्र दिव्य है और रत्नों से जड़ा है, और चंदन कस्तूरी से सुगंधित है। इसमें से कुछ भी भौतिक नहीं है। अंतिम शब्द यह साफ़ कह देते हैं: यह सब हृदय में गढ़ा गया था। फिर भी शिव से, जो करुणा से भरे हैं, इसे स्वीकार करने की विनती की जाती है।

एक छोटी बच्ची खिलौने वाला खाली प्याला और तश्तरी सजाती है, प्लास्टिक की केतली से उँडेलती है, कुछ नहीं की दो डलियाँ डालती है, और सँभालकर अपने दादा को थमा देती है। वे धीरे-धीरे चुस्की लेते हैं और कहते हैं कि बिलकुल सही बनी है। प्याला खाली था। उँडेलने में जो जतन था वह सच्चा था, और वही उन्हें मिला।
