Meaning · English

On a golden plate inlaid with nine gems: ghee, rice pudding, five foods, milk, curd, bananas, sweet drink, countless greens, water, camphor-bright betel. Lord, accept it, imagined with love.

The poet serves Shiva a full meal. The plate is gold, set with nine kinds of gems. On it go ghee, sweet rice pudding, five kinds of food, milk and curd, bananas, a sweet drink, more greens than anyone could count, and cool water. Last comes betel leaf with a bright piece of camphor, the way a meal ends for an honoured guest. None of it is cooked. The closing line says the poet laid it all out in the mind, with devotion, and asks the Lord to take it.

Picture a small child at a pretend tea party. The cups are empty, but the child pours carefully, adds sugar, and holds a cup out to her father, who drinks it. Nothing was in the cup, yet the father has been served. The poet holds out a gold plate the same way, and Shiva is asked to accept it.
