Meaning · English

A parasol, two whisks, a fan, a clear mirror; lute, drums and horns, song and dance; full prostration, many hymns. All offered to you by intention. Accept this worship, Lord.

The guest has been bathed and fed. Now come the honours given to a king. A parasol shades him, and a pair of whisks and a fan keep him cool. A spotless mirror lets him see himself adorned. Then music: strings, two kinds of drum, a horn, singing and dancing. Last, the worshipper's own body goes down flat in full prostration, and praise follows in many forms. The key word is intention. None of this is physically present. It is all given by firm resolve in the mind.

A pianist on a long flight rests her hands on the tray table and plays a whole concerto with silent fingers. No one hears a note, yet every passage is there, in order, played with care. That is the music, dance and bowing here: complete and deliberate, though nothing is sounded or set out.
