Light Borrowed From Him
Bhagavad Gita 15.12
Meaning · English
The brilliance in the sun that lights up the entire solar system, the brilliance in the moon, and the brightness in fire: know that all of this brilliance is mine.
Three words carry the verse. Tejas is brilliance, the power of a thing to shine and give light and heat. Bhasayate means to illuminate: the sun's light does not stay in the sun, it reaches the whole world. Viddhi is a command to know, and in the Gita knowing means more than agreeing. Mamakam means mine, belonging to me. Krishna tells Arjuna that the brilliance of the sun, the moon and fire is not their own. It is his. Each of the three is something people look at and rely on, and he points through each one to the source. His reason follows from the verses before it, where he says the ignorant fail to perceive him and those with eyes of knowledge do perceive. Here he gives those eyes something to look at: the light by which anything is seen. The sun lights the day, the moon the night, and fire the dark room. Wherever light is, he says, it is his. Shankara reads this as the light of the Self that makes all else visible. Ramanuja reads the sun, moon and fire as belonging to the Lord, who dwells within them as their inner self. Madhva stresses that they shine by the Lord's power and remain distinct from him. The verse asks the listener to learn to notice.
A house runs a lamp, a fan and a refrigerator, and each seems to have its own power. Follow every cord back and they meet at one meter on the wall. Sun, moon and fire are the lamp, the fan and the refrigerator, and Krishna says the single supply behind them all is his.
1. Tomorrow morning, stand for two minutes at a window or door as the daylight comes in. Notice that you did nothing to bring it. 2. This evening, light a lamp or candle, or switch on a small light, and watch the flame or glow for one minute without any other task. 3. When the moon is up, step outside once this week. Look at it and remember that Krishna calls its brightness his. 4. Each time, say quietly: this light is not mine, and I am allowed to see by it.
Imran is on the roof at dusk after the power has gone out. His daughter is scared of the dark below. He lights an oil lamp, and her face loosens. The sky is turning violet and a thin moon is rising. For a moment he sees three lights at once: the last of the sun, the moon, and the small flame in his hand. Krishna's verse asks him to take that moment one step further. He names each light, sun, moon and flame, and then sees that Krishna calls all three his. The sky and the lamp stop being separate things to manage and become one gift, and Imran can be thankful to a single source. His daughter, seeing him calm, calms too. Ordinary experience agrees that daylight and a steady light change how awake or settled a person feels. The verse does not restore the power, pay the bill, or take away a child's fear of the dark. It offers a way to look at the light that is already there.
