Effort Without a Clean Mind

Bhagavad Gita 15.11

Meaning · English

Yogis who strive see this soul enshrined in the body. But those whose minds are not purified, though they strive, do not cognize it. They remain unaware.

Krishna sets two strivers side by side. Both work hard, and only one sees. Two terms carry the difference. Yogi means one who is joined, someone who has bound the mind to a single aim. Akritatma means one whose self, or mind, has not been made ready; akrita is unmade, unprepared. Achetas means without awareness, the mind present but not awake. The plain sense is that the soul sits within the body, and effort alone does not bring sight of it. The mind that looks must be purified first. Krishna says this because the verses just before speak of the ignorant who cannot see the soul even as it leaves, stays or enjoys, while those with the eye of knowledge see. So this verse answers a worry: what of people who try and still fail? His answer is that trying is not the same as being ready, and a clouded mind sees nothing however hard it strives. What it asks of the listener is care about the state of the mind doing the work, not only the amount of work. Shankara reads purification as the cleansing of the mind from desire and impurity, which makes knowledge possible. Ramanuja takes the seeing as the devoted yogi's direct vision of the soul, which needs a mind steadied by discipline. Madhva stresses that the soul is seen by those who are fit, through the grace of the Lord.

Picture a man scrubbing at a fogged window from the inside, working harder and harder, when the haze is on the glass itself. The scrubbing is the striving. The fog is the unpurified mind, and the view beyond is the soul, which stays hidden until the glass is clear.

1. Tonight, pick one thing you have been working at hard, a task, a habit or a prayer, and sit for five minutes with a pen and paper. 2. Write what is clouding your mind as you do it: worry, hurry, wanting praise, resentment. 3. Choose one cloud and set it down before you begin tomorrow. Say it aloud once, then start the work. 4. At the end of the day, note whether the work felt any clearer. Do not judge it, only notice.

A student sits at her desk at midnight, the night before an exam. She has read the same page six times and remembers nothing. She is trying hard. What stands in the way is not effort, it is a mind full of dread, and the dread is doing the reading. In the Gita's terms, the striving is real but the mind is not ready to see. The verse would change the moment in steps. First, it separates effort from clarity, so she can stop counting hours as proof. Second, it points her to the state of the mind: she closes the book, drinks water, breathes slowly, and lets the dread be named as dread. Third, she returns to the page with the same effort but a quieter mind. Ordinary experience confirms this much: a tired or frightened mind takes in little however long it sits. Krishna's larger claim, that the clouded mind cannot see the soul within the body, is his teaching about the self and is said as that. The limit is plain. A calmer mind does not guarantee the exam goes well, and if the dread is constant and heavy, a doctor or counsellor is the right person to speak to.
