Meaning · English
The ignorant do not see the one who departs, who stays, or who enjoys, bound up with the modes of nature. Those who have the eyes of knowledge behold it.
Krishna names three moments: the self leaving the body, living in it, and enjoying through it. Each time, he says, it is under the guna, the pull of the three modes of nature that colour every mood and appetite. The ignorant are called vimudha, which means bewildered or deluded. They look at a life and see only the body and its pleasures, so the one living it goes unnoticed. The seers have jnana-chakshu, eyes of knowledge. Here chakshu is an inner sight, not the physical eye, and it is the ability to notice what stays the same through every change. Krishna says this because Arjuna is about to grieve over bodies. In the verses just before, the soul has been shown carrying the senses with it like air carrying scent. This verse adds that most people never notice the carrier. They watch the scents. What Krishna asks is that Arjuna learn to look differently, to see the one behind the leaving, the staying and the enjoying. Shankara reads the seers as those who know the self as distinct from body and senses. Ramanuja reads them as those whose knowledge, drawn from scripture, shows the soul as separate from matter. Madhva reads their knowledge as including the soul's dependence on the Lord.
In a cinema, the audience follows the scenes, the chases and the farewells. Hardly anyone looks at the beam of light behind them that carries every picture to the screen. The scenes are the body's arriving, staying and leaving. The beam is the one who lives through them, unseen by those watching only the film.
1. Pick one ordinary meal today and eat the first few bites slowly. Notice the taste, and then notice that someone is noticing it. 2. In the evening, sit for three minutes and recall a day from years ago. Ask what in you was present then and is present now. 3. When a strong mood arrives, such as irritation or craving, say quietly to yourself, "this is a pull." Watch who is watching it, without trying to change it.
A daughter sits beside her father's hospital bed late at night, watching his breathing slow and counting the seconds between breaths. She is exhausted, hungry and frightened, and all she can see is the body: the monitor, the hands, the tubing. Krishna's teaching gives her a different way of looking, step by step. First, she can notice that the fear and the fatigue are moods passing through her, the pull of nature that the text speaks of. Second, she can ask what in her is aware of the moods, and what in her father has always looked out through those eyes. Third, she can stay with him as a person and not only as a failing body. Ordinary experience confirms that tired, frightened people see narrowly, and that a pause often widens what they notice. The teaching does not promise that her grief will lift or that her father will recover. It is not a substitute for the nurses and doctors who care for him. Whether the self departs and travels on is the text's own teaching, and it is offered here as that.
