The Mind Among Senses

Bhagavad Gita 15.9

Meaning · English

The ears, the eyes, the sense of touch, the tongue and the nose also: grouped around the mind, they savor the sense objects.

Three words carry it. Indriya means a sense, and here there are five: ear, eye, touch, tongue, nose. Manas is the mind, the inner sorter that gathers what the five bring in. Upasevate means to savor, to wait on and enjoy, the way a host attends a guest. Krishna tells Arjuna that the embodied one does not meet the world bare. Sound, sight, contact, taste and smell come in through the five, gather around the mind, and are savored. The reason sits in the verses beside it. The soul is a fragment of Krishna, yet it carries mind and senses with it from body to body, and it enjoys through them. Krishna is laying out how experience is put together, so the verses after can speak of who stands behind it and why some fail to see him. What he asks of Arjuna is to see the arrangement: hearing, seeing and tasting are instruments, and someone uses them. Shankara reads the enjoyer as the embodied self using the body's instruments. Ramanuja reads it as the individual soul, real and distinct, enjoying through them according to its past action. Madhva reads the soul as dependent on the Lord even in this enjoying.

Picture an old reception desk with five phone lines ringing into one switchboard, and a person behind it taking each call. The five lines are ears, eyes, touch, tongue and nose. The switchboard is the mind that gathers them. The person listening is the embodied one who savors what comes through.

1. At your next meal, take the first three bites in silence, with no screen. Name to yourself which sense is working: smell, then taste, then touch of the food. 2. Once today, sit for two minutes and let one sound reach you. Notice that the ear brings it and something else receives it. 3. When a craving or a flash of irritation comes, pause for a breath and ask which sense carried it in: a smell, a sight, a remark you heard.

A woman has been on her feet since dawn. Walking home through the market at dusk, she smells onions frying, sees the glow of a sweet stall, hears the vendor call her name, and before she has decided anything her hand is on her purse. The verse slows that moment into parts. Smell, sight and sound came in through three senses. The mind gathered them into one pull. Someone inside is savoring. Seeing it in parts, she can ask what she actually wants before the purse opens: food, rest, or only the pleasure of being called. She may still buy the sweet, and nothing is lost by it. Ordinary experience agrees that tiredness makes the senses pull harder. The verse does not promise that wanting will fade or that hunger or fatigue will stop mattering. It does not replace a meal, sleep or a doctor's advice where those are needed. It only names who is doing the savoring.
