Bhagavad Gita 16.5
Meaning · English
The godly endowment leads toward liberation; the demoniac is counted as leading to bondage. Do not grieve, Arjun, son of Pandu, for you are born with the godly virtues.
Three words carry the verse. Vimoksha is release: vi means apart, and moksha comes from a root meaning to loosen or let go. Nibandha is binding, from a root meaning to tie. Sampat is an endowment, what a person is richly given, and abhijata means born into it. Krishna tells Arjuna that the godly endowment leads toward release, while the demoniac one, as the tradition counts it, leads to bondage. Then comes the turn: do not grieve, Arjuna, for you are born with the godly endowment. The reason sits in the verses just before. Krishna has listed the godly qualities, such as forgiveness and bearing enmity toward none, and the demoniac ones, such as arrogance, anger and harshness. A man about to enter a battle could fairly wonder which list he belongs to. Krishna answers before the doubt hardens into grief, and tells Arjuna his footing is sound. Shankara reads release and bondage as freedom from, or being tied to, the cycle of birth and death. Ramanuja reads the godly endowment as the soul's fitting disposition for reaching God. Madhva presses the word born, taking it as a real inborn difference among souls.
Two ropes lie in a rowboat. One is tied to the shore and tows the boat in. The other is tied to an anchor and holds it fast in the mud. Same hands, same boat. The first rope is the godly endowment, pulling toward release; the second is the demoniac, tying the boat in place.
1. Tonight, take five minutes with a pen and paper. Write two short columns: one habit of yours that loosens you, such as forgiving quickly, and one that ties you, such as a hot temper. 2. Next to the first, write the last time it showed up. Read that line slowly. 3. Tomorrow, when the second one flares, name it quietly as a rope, not as a verdict on you. 4. At bedtime, note one small moment when the first rope pulled.
A mother snaps at her six-year-old in a supermarket queue, then stands there hot with shame, wondering what kind of person speaks that way. The verse speaks to that second after the snap. Krishna's words to Arjuna would first separate the act from the whole self: harshness is on the list of ties, but it does not decide who she is. Then comes the endowment she was born with, the patience she has shown a hundred other days. Then comes the direction: grief that says 'I am hopeless' goes nowhere, while an honest look at the harshness, with a fresh start, goes somewhere. She crouches, apologises to the child and breathes. Ordinary experience bears this out: shame tends to make people repeat what they regret, while a steady sense of one's own worth makes repair easier. The verse does not promise that the temper is gone, that the child's feelings are undone, or that the day gets easier. It also does not replace help from a doctor or counsellor if anger or low mood has become constant.
