Marks of a Hardened Heart

Bhagavad Gita 16.4

Meaning · English

Hypocrisy, arrogance, conceit, anger, harshness and ignorance, Arjun, son of Pritha, belong to those born with the demoniac nature.

Krishna has just listed godly qualities. Now he names the other set, the asuri sampad. Sampad means wealth, what a person is endowed with. Asuri is the demoniac, the nature that serves itself alone. Abhijata means one born into a nature, as if it came with the birth. Six marks are given. Dambha is hypocrisy, showing goodness one does not have. Darpa is arrogance, a swollen sense of one's own worth. Abhimana is conceit, a steady opinion of oneself as above others. Krodha is anger. Parushya is harshness, roughness in speech and manner. Ajnana is ignorance, not seeing what is right or what is real. Krishna lists them so Arjuna can recognise them, in others and in himself. The list runs from inner display to outer roughness and ends in ignorance, which sits under the rest. Shankara reads the ignorance as failing to tell right action from wrong. Ramanuja and Madhva also take these as qualities that bind a person to repeated suffering, and they place them against the godly set. The verse asks the listener to learn the signs.

A pot left on a fire with a lid clamped shut. Outside it looks calm and polished. Inside, the pressure builds until the lid rattles and hot water spits out. Hypocrisy is the polished surface, and pride, anger and harshness are the spitting steam.

1. Tonight, before sleep, recall one moment today when your voice turned sharp. Write down in one line what you were protecting. 2. Tomorrow, notice once when you act more pleasant or more certain than you feel. Just name it silently as show. 3. When you catch a sharp word forming, pause for one slow breath before you speak.

A shopkeeper is short with a customer who asks for credit. The rent is due, he is tired, and the man's request feels like an insult. He answers with a cutting remark, then smiles at the next customer as though nothing happened. The verse reads that moment closely. The smile over the harshness is the hypocrisy it names. The sting in his words came from fear about money and his standing, dressed as pride. Seeing this in order, he might notice the heat in his chest, name it anger, and soften his tone before he speaks again. He may even apologise. Ordinary experience confirms that worry and tiredness make people curt. The verse does not promise that the rent will be paid, or that the worry leaves. It does not make a person gentle in one stroke. It only says these six marks can be seen and named, and the Gita treats that seeing as the start of change.
