Strength Without Hostility

Bhagavad Gita 16.3

Meaning · English

Vigor, forgiveness, fortitude, cleanliness, bearing enmity toward none, and freedom from vanity: these qualities belong to one who is born with godly endowment, scion of Bharat.

Three words carry the verse. Tejas is vigor, a bright strength that shows in a person's presence. Kshama is forgiveness, from a root sense of bearing or enduring: it means being able to take a wrong without hitting back. Droha is the wish to harm or hold a grudge, so adroha is having none. Krishna tells Arjuna that six qualities mark the person born with godly endowment: vigor, forgiveness, fortitude, cleanliness, no enmity toward anyone, and no excess pride. Notice the pairing. Strength is named first, and then everything that keeps strength from turning cruel. Fortitude is the steadiness to keep going when things are hard. Cleanliness is of body and of mind. The lack of vanity means not thinking oneself more than one is. He says this to Arjuna, who is about to fight and is troubled, so the list tells him that a warrior can be forceful and still free of hatred. Shankara reads cleanliness as both outer washing and inner purity of the mind. Ramanuja reads the whole list as the natural traits of those drawn toward liberation. Madhva also treats them as marks of a godly nature. The verse asks the listener to check for these in himself.

A good strong rope is thick and firm, yet it does not lash out. Used well, it hauls a bucket from a well or ties a boat safely. The verse pictures vigor like that rope: real strength held with forgiveness and humility, so it serves rather than whips.

1. Tonight, recall one person who irritated you this week. Say silently, for one minute, that you hold nothing against them, and notice whether your shoulders loosen. 2. Tomorrow morning, wash your face and hands slowly and tidy one small spot, such as your bed or a table, as an act of cleanliness. 3. Once today, when you are praised, simply say thank you and add nothing to it. 4. When something hard comes up, stay with it five minutes longer before giving up.

A bus driver, tired at the end of a long route, is shouted at by a passenger who missed his stop. The old reflex is to snap back and carry the anger home. The verse would change the moment in steps. Vigor keeps the driver steady and alert rather than flattened. Forgiveness lets the insult pass without a reply that makes things worse. Fortitude carries him through the last stretch of the shift. Having no enmity means he does not rehearse the quarrel at dinner. Without vanity, he does not need to win. Ordinary experience confirms that grudges keep a person tense and awake long after the other person has forgotten them, and that being clean and rested makes patience easier. The limit is plain: the verse does not promise that the passenger will apologise, that the tiredness will vanish, or that real abuse should simply be endured. Where a person is threatened or hurt, they should seek help and protection. Forgiveness in the verse is about not carrying hatred, not about staying in harm's way.
