Gentle Conduct Toward Everyone

Bhagavad Gita 16.2

Meaning · English

Non-violence, truthfulness, absence of anger, renunciation, peacefulness, restraint from fault-finding, compassion toward all living beings, absence of covetousness, gentleness, modesty, and lack of fickleness.

Krishna keeps listing the marks of a godly nature, and this stretch is about how a person treats others. Ahimsa is non-harming, from a, not, and himsa, the wish to hurt. It covers thought and word as well as the blow. Apaishunam is not carrying tales or hunting for faults, the quiet cruelty of someone who always finds the flaw. Hri is the inner flinch that keeps a person from shameful acts, which is modesty. Achapalam is not being restless, so that hands, tongue and wants do not run wherever they please. The rest of the list is truthfulness, freedom from anger, renunciation, peace, compassion toward every living being, no covetousness and gentleness. Together they describe someone it is safe to stand near. Krishna offers them as the wealth of a person in whom the godly side is strong, and the verses after this set harshness and anger against them. Shankara reads ahimsa as causing pain to no creature, and truthfulness as speech that matches what is known and does no harm. Ramanuja takes the list as the ground of a life turned toward God. Madhva likewise reads these as qualities that prepare a person to know God.

A river pebble that has passed through many hands has no edge left to cut anyone. It is smooth, it sits still where it is placed, and it takes nothing from the hand that holds it. The listed qualities describe a person worn like that: no sharp corners in speech or wanting, so others can come close without being hurt.

1. Tonight, before you sleep, recall one moment today when you spoke about someone who was not there. Notice whether the words were fair or merely sharp. 2. Tomorrow, when you feel a criticism rising in your mouth, wait for three slow breaths before deciding whether to say it. 3. Once this week, do one small kind act for a person, an animal or a plant that nobody will thank you for. 4. Notice, for one day, each time you reach for your phone without a reason. Just count the times.

A woman at a cousin's wedding hears an aunt run down another relative's marriage. She has a sharp, funny remark ready, and everyone nearby would laugh. The verse would slow that moment down. First she notices the pull to join in, which is the fault-finding the text names. Then she asks whether the remark is true, and whether it is kind, since the text puts truthfulness and gentleness side by side. Then she lets the remark go, or answers with something warm about the person being discussed. Ordinary experience confirms that tiredness and a crowd weaken restraint, and that a sharp word, once spoken, cannot be called back. Krishna's list is long and describes a settled character, so one quiet evening does not complete it. Letting the remark go also does not heal the family quarrel behind it, and it does not make the aunt kinder. It only keeps this one person from adding to the damage, and that is the part within her reach.
