Two Kinds of Beings

Bhagavad Gita 16.6

Meaning · English

There are two kinds of created beings in this world: the divine and the demoniac. The divine kind I have described at length. Now, son of Pritha, hear from me about the demoniac.

Three words carry the verse. Bhuta-sarga means a created being, a living thing that has been sent forth into the world. Daiva means divine, belonging to the gods, the bright side of character. Asura means demoniac, the opposite pull. Krishna tells Arjuna that living beings in this world fall into two kinds by their nature. He says he has already spoken about the divine kind at length, in the opening verses of this chapter. Now he turns to the other and asks Arjuna to listen. The reason is practical. A person cannot leave a pull behind until it has been named plainly, and Arjuna has just been told he is born with godly qualities and need not grieve. Knowing what the opposite looks like lets him recognise it in the world and in himself. The verse asks only for attention. Shankara reads the two kinds as two sets of tendencies, taught so that one is taken up and the other given up. Ramanuja reads them as two classes of people, set apart by whether they follow the guidance of the scriptures. Madhva takes the two classes as real and lasting differences among souls, not only moods of one person.

A doctor going through a chart with a patient first says what is healthy: good pulse, clear lungs. Then she says, now let me tell you what to watch for. The first half gives comfort and the second gives sight. Krishna does the same, describing the bright nature first, then the dark one so it can be recognised.

1. Tonight, sit for five minutes with a pen and paper and write the names of two people you know well, one whose company leaves you steadier and one whose company leaves you restless or smaller. 2. Beside each name, write one or two plain behaviours you actually saw, not guesses about their heart. 3. Tomorrow, watch for one of those behaviours in yourself, and only note it. Do not scold yourself or fix anything yet.

A man sits in a hospital corridor at midnight while his father is in surgery. The receptionist tells him, for the third time, that there is no news. He snaps at her, loudly, and sees her face fall. Krishna's turn in the verse is to describe the darker nature openly, so that a person can see it when it appears. In that corridor, the first step is simply to see what happened: fear came out as harshness, and the harshness landed on someone who had nothing to do with it. Naming it is quicker than defending it. He can then walk back, say that he is sorry, and sit down again. Ordinary experience agrees that a fault we have a name for is easier to catch than one we have never looked at. The verse does not promise that the fear goes away, that the surgery goes well, or that the receptionist will forgive him. It also does not ask him to judge himself as a bad person. It gives him a clear word for what he saw, and leaves the next step to him.
