Blind to Right and Wrong

Bhagavad Gita 16.7

Meaning · English

Those of demoniac nature do not comprehend what is proper action and what is improper. Neither purity, nor good conduct, nor truthfulness is found in them.

Two words carry the first half. Pravritti is the action one should take up, the proper course. Nivritti is the action one should hold back from, the improper course. Krishna says people of demoniac nature do not comprehend either one. The trouble is not that they choose wrong now and then. They cannot tell which is which, so nothing inside tells them to go or to stop. The second half lists what follows. Shaucha is purity, cleanness of mind and dealings. Achara is conduct, the steady way a person behaves. Satya is truthfulness. Krishna says none of these is found in them. The reason sits in the verses beside it. He has just said these qualities lead toward bondage, and he is describing them so Arjuna can recognise them and not mistake himself for one of them. The problem he answers is how to spot a life that has lost its inner guide. On the commentators: Shankara reads the two terms as knowing what is to be done and what is to be avoided for one's real good. Ramanuja ties them to what the scriptures direct a person toward and away from. Madhva reads the ignorance as ignorance of the path to liberation versus bondage. What it asks of the listener is to treat the ability to tell proper from improper as something precious, and to keep it in working order.

A crossing where the traffic light has gone dark. Cars still move, drivers still want to arrive, but nobody knows when to go or stop, and the first one in a hurry causes the crash. The verse describes a person whose inner sense of go and stop has gone out in that way.

1. Tonight, before sleep, spend two minutes recalling one moment today when something in you said stop, even a small one, like a sharp word or a shortcut. 2. Write down what you did with that signal: obeyed it, argued with it, or ignored it. 3. Tomorrow, when the same quiet signal comes, pause for ten seconds before acting, and notice what changes. 4. Once this week, tell one small truth you would normally smooth over, and notice how it feels afterwards.

A shopkeeper counts the till at closing and finds it two hundred over. Nobody saw the mistake, and the customer who overpaid is long gone. A small voice says to keep it, and another says it is not his. Krishna's teaching begins with that voice. Going by this teaching, the first thing to ask is whether the signal still reaches him at all. He notices the pull of the money, then notices the unease beneath it. He names the act plainly: this is not mine. He sets the money aside in an envelope to return, or to settle with the next customer who comes up short. Doing so keeps purity, conduct and truthfulness alive in a small, ordinary way, because they are kept by use. Ordinary experience confirms that a conscience ignored repeatedly speaks more quietly each time. The limit is plain. Listening to the signal does not make the choice easy, does not repay the rent, and does not guarantee that others will be honest back. It only keeps the shopkeeper able to tell which way is which.
