A World Without Anchor
Bhagavad Gita 16.8
Meaning · English
They say the world is without absolute truth, without any basis, without a God, created without cause. What else is it but for sexual gratification only?
Krishna is quoting a way of thinking, not stating his own. He describes what the demoniac type of person says about the world. Three words carry it. Asatya is "not true," so the world has no firm truth behind it. Anishvara is "no Ishvara," no lord or ruler over it. Kama is desire, and kama-haitukam means desire is the only cause. Put together, the claim runs: nothing stands under the world, nobody governs it, nothing set it going, so the only reason left is appetite. Krishna gives the reason this matters in the neighbouring lines. A person who believes this has no cause to tell proper action from improper, or to hold back. The belief shapes the life that follows. It asks nothing of the person who holds it, and that is why it feels easy. Shankara reads the phrase about causelessness as saying the world is born only of the union of man and woman, with lust as its sole cause. Ramanuja takes it as the view of those who deny a controlling Lord and therefore live for enjoyment. Madhva likewise treats it as the outlook of those who reject God, and sees it leading to a life of pleasure-seeking.
Picture a bus station at night with no timetable, no staff and no signs. Nobody knows who runs it or why the buses come. People simply push toward whatever door is open. The world these people describe is that station, and desire is the only crowd that moves through it.
1. Tonight, finish this sentence on paper in one line: "The world is for..." Write what your days actually show, not what you would like to say. 2. Look back over yesterday and mark any hour spent only on wanting something: a snack, a scroll, a purchase. Just count them. 3. Choose one daily act, such as making tea or answering a message, and name one person beyond yourself it serves. Do it with that person in mind, once, today.
A young man stands at a cousin's wedding party near midnight. A friend, glass in hand, says life has no point and the only sense is to take what pleases you. He laughs along, but on the ride home he feels hollow and cannot say why. Krishna's account lets him name what he heard: a view of the world with no truth under it, no one over it, and appetite as its only reason. Step by step, he can ask what that view would require of him tomorrow. It would require nothing, no duty to a parent, no limit on a craving, no reason to be honest when unseen. Seeing that, he can notice how much of his own week already runs on that quiet assumption. The verse does not promise that he will then feel certain or at peace, and it does not settle his doubts for him. Ordinary experience does show that a day spent only on wanting tends to leave more wanting behind. The Gita's claim is its own: that a person's view of the world decides how he acts in it.
