Views That Harm the World
Bhagavad Gita 16.9
Meaning · English
Holding such views, these lost souls of small intellect arise as doers of cruel deeds, enemies of the world, working for its destruction.
Three words carry the verse. Drishti is a view, a way of seeing, from a root meaning to see. Alpa-buddhi is a small intellect: alpa is little, buddhi is the faculty that discerns. Ahita means not-friend, an enemy, someone who works against another's good. Krishna has just described people who say the world has no truth, no ground and no God, and exists only for appetite. Now he says where that view leads. People who hold it become cruel in what they do, and their actions work toward the world's ruin. The misdirected souls are not stupid. Their discernment is narrow, fixed on what can be grabbed, and so they cannot see what their actions cost others. The reason is that action follows sight. If nothing is sacred and nothing is owed, cruelty meets no inner resistance. Krishna is telling Arjuna what such a belief does when it is lived out, and he is not only judging it. The commentators read the first phrase differently. Shankara takes the lost souls as those who have lost sight of the inner Self and fallen from the human goal. Ramanuja takes them as people who mistake the body for the self and so harm others for its sake. Madhva takes them as beings whose own nature is set against the divine.
A hiker whose compass is off by a few degrees feels fine at every step. The path looks straight and each stride is honest. Hours later he is in a different valley altogether, and anyone camped nearby has been trampled. The compass is the view, and the steps are the actions that follow it.
1. Tonight, take five minutes and recall one moment today when you were short, hard or careless with someone. 2. Write one sentence naming the belief behind it, such as "it doesn't matter" or "they had it coming." 3. Ask whether that sentence would still seem true if the person it touched were reading it. 4. Over the next few days, watch for that same sentence appearing just before you act, and notice what it makes easy.
A man runs a small dye workshop on the edge of a village. It is late, the tank is full, and the stream behind the shed is dark and quiet. Nobody checks. He tells himself that one night's waste is nothing, that the stream is big, that everyone does it. The verse would change this moment in steps. First, it makes him notice that a belief has just spoken: it doesn't matter, nobody sees. Second, it asks what that belief leaves out, which is the family downstream drawing water at dawn. Third, it shows him where the belief goes if it is repeated: tonight's shortcut becomes his habit, and the habit becomes the way he sees everything. Krishna tells Arjuna that cruel action comes from a narrowed view first, and the deed follows. Ordinary experience agrees that a thought like "no one is watching" loosens restraint quickly. The limit is plain. Seeing this does not empty the tank, clean the stream or pay for proper disposal. It shows him the choice clearly, and the choice is still his to make.
