Meaning · English
Arjuna said: Those who set aside the injunctions of scripture, yet worship with faith, what is their standing, Krishna? Is it goodness, passion, or ignorance?
This is Arjuna's question, not Krishna's teaching. It is what he asks in that moment. Three words carry it. Shraddha is faith, the trust a person gives from the heart before proof arrives. Nishtha is standing, the ground a person's faith is fixed on. Sattva, rajas and tamas are goodness, passion and ignorance, the three qualities the Gita uses to sort what moves a mind. Shastra-vidhi is the rule laid down in scripture for how worship is done. Arjuna has just heard that those who drop the scriptural rule go astray. Now he points to a case that does not fit: people who drop the rule but still worship sincerely. He asks where such faith belongs. Is it clear and steady, restless and driven, or dull and clouded? His reason is simple. Sincerity and obedience have come apart, and he cannot tell which one counts. Shankara reads these as people who follow the customs of their elders without knowing scripture. Ramanuja reads them as people who neglect a rule they do know, through laziness or similar lapses, while still keeping faith. Both treat the question as a real one about what sort of faith this is.
A lamp is lit in a house with no instructions for lighting it. One person cups the flame against the draught. Another tosses it down in a rush. A third leaves it smoking in a dusty corner. All three call it a lamp, but each shows a different quality of care. Arjuna's question asks which care sits behind the faith.
1. Tonight, pick one thing you do out of habit or trust, such as a prayer, a ritual, or a kindness, and write down in one line why you do it. 2. Notice the feeling behind it for two minutes: steadiness, hurry, fear, or numbness. 3. Tomorrow, do the same act once more and see whether the feeling is the same.
A woman sits in a hospital courtyard while her husband is in surgery. Nobody taught her a prayer, so she ties a thread to a tree and lights a small lamp. Arjuna's question fits her. It does not ask whether she has done the ritual correctly. It asks what her faith is made of in that hour. Step by step: she can look at what she is doing, and notice whether the lamp steadies her, whether she is bargaining with God, or whether she is only going through the motions to keep from thinking. Those are three different states, and the question lets her tell them apart without scolding herself. The text's own answer comes from Krishna, and Arjuna asks only for the sorting. Ordinary experience confirms that fear and calm can look identical from the outside. The question does not promise that the surgery will go well. It does not take away her dread, and it does not replace the surgeon or the nurses doing their work. It gives her a way to see her own heart while she waits.
