Meaning · English

The Supreme Personality said: The faith of embodied beings is of three kinds, born of their own innate nature: of goodness, of passion, and of ignorance. Hear now about this.

Krishna answers Arjuna's question by first sorting faith into three kinds. Three words carry it. Shraddha is faith, the trust a person puts in something and then lives by. Dehina means embodied beings, those who live in a body, so the verse is about ordinary people, not saints. Svabhava is one's own nature: sva is self, bhava is becoming or being, so it means what a person has grown into being. Krishna says faith is born of that nature. It is not a belief picked up on a whim, and it is not the same in everyone. The three kinds are named after the three gunas, or modes: sattva, goodness, a clear and steady quality; rajas, passion, a restless and driven one; tamas, ignorance, a dull and clouded one. The reason is Arjuna's puzzle: what becomes of people who trust sincerely but without the rulebook? Krishna does not say they have no faith. He says every body-bound person has faith, and its quality shows the nature behind it. Then he asks Arjuna to listen, which sets up the account that follows. Shankara reads the nature as the tendencies carried from earlier lives, shaped by past action. Ramanuja takes the three modes as what rules a person's mind and so colors their trust. Madhva stresses that these three kinds of faith are tied to the souls' differing natures.

Think of three people planting in the same patch of ground, each with seeds from their own pocket. The fruit differs because the seed differs, not the soil. Faith is the seed, the person's nature is the pocket it came from, and what grows later shows which seed went in.

1. Pick one thing you trust today, such as a habit, a person, a routine, or a belief about how to get ahead. 2. Write one line on why you trust it. Is it because it steadies you, because it drives you to win, or because it lets you avoid looking? 3. Notice, for the rest of the day, which mood the trust leaves you in: clear, hurried, or dull. 4. Do not judge it. Only name it, once, in plain words.

A shopkeeper opens the shutter the morning the rent is due and touches the small framed picture by the till, as he does every day. Tonight he will ask himself why he trusts that picture, his supplier, and his own hard work. The verse would change the moment in steps. First, he sees that his trust has a source in his own temperament and is not simply a fact about the world. Second, he asks what mood his trust carries today: steadiness, a rush to prove himself, or a numb going through the motions. Third, he treats that answer as information about himself, not a verdict. Ordinary experience agrees that what we lean on tends to reflect how we are made and how we have lived. The old talk of three modes has no direct counterpart in medicine or psychology, and it is offered here as the Gita's own teaching. The verse does not promise that sincere trust will pay the rent, ease worry, or replace advice from an accountant when the numbers are bad.
